Etosha Game Drive

Are we watching them or are they watching us??

Day 10 of our tour treated us to the Etoshia National Park Game drive. I was excited for a full day of getting to see the animals in Africa. After all, that was one of the main reasons for my visit!

Ready to see all the animals!

Our Etosha game drive started around 7am to give us the best chance to see the animals.  We split into two groups and only 5 rode in my truck: Charlotte and Audrey in the front, Lisha and me in the middle and Brandon in the back which meant that we all got a window seat.  We saw packs of Zebra, Ostrich, and Springbok throughout the day.

Don’t run away!
Love their reflection in the water
I can get used to seeing them all the time

Who thought you would begin to think it was start to feel normal to see a Zebra??  Zebra are one of my favorites, I love how they all have different patterns of stripes so that no two Zebra are the same. Although we loved watching them, we really began to search for some of the more elusive animals.

Was enjoying watching the Rhino until it started charging us

We finally saw a Black Rhino that was about 20 years old.  It was just walking along when all of the sudden it picked up the pace and started charging towards us.  A chorus of curse words were coming from our mouthes as we thought for certain that it would attack the truck.  Luckily we had an experienced guide who drove the truck out of harms way.  It was our only close encounter throughout the day.  Who knew that our Etosha Game Drive would be so scary??

This one could care less about us

We did spot another Black Rhino a couple of hours later which was older and lazier.  The guide guessed that the Black Rhino was 30 to 40 years old.  It was content to just sit under a tree.  Unfortunately we couldn’t get a great photo since a there was a small tree in the way.

Such an awkward pose

Towards the end of the day, we spotted several Giraffe. They all seemed to have gathered in the one area of the park.  We got to watch a Giraffe drink water which they have to spread out their front legs a bit and lean over in a funny manner to drink.  We saw a couple of Elephants from afar and kept hoping that we would see more.

Enjoying all animals, big and small
Somehow chipmunks are cuter in the wild
Even enjoyed looking at the ugly ones 🙂
In my dreams, I would see lions chasing prey but instead they were just lazy

We finally saw a lioness laying under a tree with her baby.  It was starting to seem like Lions were lazy animals.  Every time we saw one, it was just napping under a tree.  We got to watch the cub drink from her mom.  Nearby was another Lioness who was very well camouflaged in with the tree.  When our guide told us he could see with the naked eye and none of us could see her with binoculars or cameras, we began to think he might be a little crazy.  But after 15 minutes, the Lioness lifted her head up and the rest of us could finally see her hiding in the bushes.  It was a full day as we returned to camp around 5pm, both exhausted and hot.
